As a young teenager growing up in rural New Jersey - we lived in a small village
called South Branch. Being a small village - there wasn’t much excitement. To
amuse ourselves, we would explore the small islands in the middle of the river
in front of our house. We would build tree houses and fish and act like
Huck Finn.
However, one of the fondest memories that I have was the “Quick - lea- Farm”.
It was a dairy farm located across a field at the edge of the village. They had
a herd of 50 milking cows. All of my 3 older brothers had worked on the farm at
one time or another, helping in the fields bailing hay in the summers. At age
12, I started sneaking up to the farm to help also. ( I was sure my mother would
never know) Of course one short walk through the barn with the cows would be a
dead giveaway when I returned home for dinner.
By the time I was 14, I had convinced my Mother to let me help in the barn. My
“job” was to go to the farm after school and bring the cows in from the pasture
about ¼ of a mile away from the barn. Then I could help with the milking and I
was also allowed to spread the manure - Driving the big John Deere tractor! For
a boy of 14 - that was a big thing.
I worked on that farm on and off for the next 4 or 5 years. It was a lot of
hard work - but one of my fondest memories.
